How I reset my hormones + kicked caffeine without a headache

Let me start this with saying that stress my friends is a killer. There is a time and a place for stress, but constant stress running in the back and foreground at all times is a killer. I’ve seen my mom struggle with this, my aunts, actually all the woman in my family… I’m now being presented with a chance to nip this trait in the butt. I have been so overly stressed and running on empty. It caught up with me, thank goodness. It giving me the chance to change.

Recently I began to have night sweats, like pretty bad ones. I’d wake up drenched, totally wet and have to get up and walk outside to cool off… this was in January and February and we sleep with the heat off so I knew something was up. I also had started to notice a kind of purple blue color around the inside corners of my eyes. Something was up. I eat super clean, workout regular and go to sleep by 9 most nights, and I AM A HELATH COACH, I should have this down!

I somewhere inside of myself knew what it was that I needed to do. I needed to cut the caffeine. When I did my meditation this is what was coming to me really strongly. I had been over using chocolate, coffee (even though it was bulletproof!), black teas and matcha. If you follow me on instagram, you probably saw all my coffee/matcha/black tea/cacao tonics. I was relaying on caffeine more than I ever had. I’m in the midst of opening a second Local Juicery and a restaurant in Sedona while trying to consciously raise a three year old and keep the heart of my marriage beating. So I over caffeinated out of stress and exhaustion. Caffeine is great when used as a tool, but when you become addicted it isn’t you using it anymore, you’re being used up! Especially as women. Coffee in particular spikes your cortisol and shuts down 20% of your brain function that helps you make good decisions, making you less alert and ingenuitive. Consuming coffee everyday can lead to weight gain as well because when it hits your system it goes right to the hypothalamus (the gland that controls your hormone secrtions). It totally screws with your natural cycles. When your hormones get messed with, a lot can go wrong as, I found out.

After doing a lot of research and checking in with my body, I decided I’d quit for the month to see what I could help within my body… and of course I quit the week that I was doing a full on catering event (I always quit at the seemingly wrong time). Since I had this big and important job to do and I needed to be kind, loving and putting good energy into the food, I knew I had to be smart about quitting. In the past I would always just go cold turkey and it made me incredibly irritable and I had migraines that were insane. This time was different. Here is what I did:

1 //  I told my family and everyone I worked with that I was quitting (so they could have a little more empathy and compassion when I inevitably snapped at them). This just prepped people for the mood swings as my hormones adjusted and my body detoxed.

2 // I cut my coffee intake to half of what I was doing before (16/24 oz down to 8oz) for the first 3 days.

3 // on the fourth day I went to yerba mate and on the 5th white tea.

4 // on the 6th day I was only drinking gynostemma! No headaches. I loaded my tonics the same as always but with no coffee, chocolate or caffeinated substances.

“Within 5 days of having zero caffeine the night sweats stopped 100%”

Within 5 days of having zero caffeine the night sweats stopped 100%, my bowels movements (yup, I’m gonna talk about it) we’re amazing, my circles under my eyes went away, my eye whites we’re brighter and whither with no little red lines. The thing is, I knew all this! I knew I shouldn’t be drinking as much as I was, but the pull to stay at a 10 was strong. I felt like if I didn’t stay “high” I wouldn’t get anything done and I would fail my team. Nothing could have been farther from the truth.

The best part for me was seeing how outside myself caffeine takes me. Yes, it lifts me up and makes me incredibly productive, but it also keeps me from noticing all the small beauties in the way that I want to. I feel amped and at a 10 all the time when drinking caffeine… there is actually something really beautiful about being at a 5. something peaceful. I connected, like really truly connected with my son in the most real and present ways, I played in the garden for hours, I quit listing to the radio and started back up my audiobooks, I could look deeper at things that triggered me or set me off, I was more me, more who I really am. I knew I could feel the shift but it really hit home when my son put his hands on my face after a great play session and said “mama, stay how you are right now forever”. That struck my heart.

So when I do drink caffeine again, these experiences will come with me and help me not to fall back into using it as a crutch and not taking care of myself the way I need to. I want to use it when I need it, because sometimes I do need that extra push, but I want to bring my new found awareness with me! Hopefully my experience can support you in your journey to health.
